The New York City High Schools work closely in conjunction with local police and School Safety Agents in order to ensure safety in school. Acts of school violence are dealt with severely. Arrest are routinely made and prosecutions are pursued. For those students age sixteen (16) and older at the time of the offense, their cases are handled in the criminal courts-as Youthful Offenders. For those below the age of sixteen, their cases are turned over to the Family Courts, where they are tried as Juvenile Offenders.
Youthful Offender status (YO) means that a finding of guilty does not count as a criminal conviction on your record.
